Obeisance to Shri Hanuman - 1

॥ श्री हनुमत् नमस्कारः ॥

॥ ஶ்ரீ ஹனுமத் நமஸ்கார: ॥

॥ ŚRĪ HANUMAT NAMASKĀRAḤ ॥

गोष्पदी-कृत-वारीशं मशकी-कृत-राक्षसम् ।
रामायण-महामाला-रत्नं वन्देऽनिलात्मजम् ॥ १॥

கோ³ஷ்பதீ³-க்ருʼத-வாரீஶம் மஶகீ-க்ருʼத-ராக்ஷஸம் ।
ராமாயண-மஹாமாலா-ரத்னம் வந்தே³ऽனிலாத்மஜம் ॥ 1॥

goṣpadī-kṛta-vārīśaṃ maśakī-kṛta-rākṣasam ।
rāmāyaṇa-mahāmālā-ratnaṃ vande'nilātmajam ॥ 1॥

பிரதி பத அர்த்தம்  :

गोष्पदी  -  கோ³ஷ்பதீ³  -  பசுவின் கால் குளம்பின் அடியில் (மிதிபட்ட மண்ணாக),

कृत  -  க்ருʼத  -  செய்த,

वारीशं  -  வாரீஶம்   -  நீர்நிலைகளின் தலைவனை (கடலை),

मशकी  -  மஶகீ  -  (எளிதில் நசுக்கிவிடக்கூடிய) கொசுவாக

कृत  -  க்ருʼத  -  செய்த,

राक्षसम्  -  ராக்ஷஸம்  -  ராக்ஷஸர்களை,

रामायण-महामाला  -  ராமாயண-மஹாமாலா  -  ராமாயணம் என்கிற சிறந்த மாலையில் (கோர்க்ப்பட்டுள்ள),

रत्नं  -  ரத்னம்  -  (உயரிய) ரத்னமாகிய (ஹனுமானை),

अनिलात्मजम्  -  அனிலாத்மஜம்  -  வாயு புத்திரனை ,

वन्दे  -  வந்தே³  -  வணங்குகிறேன்.

பொருள் :

கடலைக் ( பசுவின் கால் ) குளம்படி போல் செய்தவனும், அரக்கர்களைக் கொசுவைப் போல் செய்தவனும், ' ராமாயணம் ' என்னும் சிறந்த மாலையின் ரத்னம் போன்று விளங்குபவனுமாகிய வாயு புத்ரனை ( ஹனுமானை ) வணங்குகிறேன்.   1

Meaning  :

I make obeisance to the son of Vayu (the Wind God), who tamed the vast ocean into a hoof-print (in the mud), turned the demons into mosquitoes, and is the gem in the great garland ' The Ramayana '.   1

ராமாயணம் என்னும் சிறந்த மாலை சிறந்த வஸ்துக்களைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து கோர்க்கப்பட்ட மாலையிலும் , சிறந்த ரத்னமாக ஹனுமான் கூறப்படுகிறார். ஏனெனில் அவர் யாரும் செய்ய இயலாத பல அருஞ்செயல்களைச் செய்துள்ளார் .

நூறு யோஜனை நீளமுள்ள கடலையும், அதைக் கடக்கும்போது உண்டான தடைகளையும்  தாண்டினார். அங்கு இருந்த ராக்ஷஸர்களுக்கு தகுந்த பாடம் கற்பித்து , லங்கையை எரித்து  , சீதையின் சூடாமணியை எடுத்து வந்து ராமனிடம் சேர்த்தது., இன்னும் இதுபோல பட்டியல் நீண்டுகொண்டே போகும். எனவே ஹனுமானை ரத்னம் என்பது மிகையாகாது.

This Itihasam itself is a Ratnam, but the pArAyaNa slOkAs talk about another, much more precious stone, which forms the centerpiece of the beautiful garland that is Srimad Ramayana. It is none other than Sri Maruti, who is extolled as a Ratnam par excellence.

And why should Sri Hanuman be equated to a Ratnam?

Perhaps because he performed feats that were considered impossible. One such is his crossing the long, broad, tumultuous and treacherous ocean that lay across his path to Lanka, in the quest for Sri Janaki.

And he exhibits more of his bravery in the service of Sri Rama, whenever and wherever the occasion demands, especially in the annihilation of the Rakshasas who meet their end at his hands, like so many mosquitoes.
For him, it is almost a sport. No wonder then that he is termed a Ratnam, adorning the garland that is Ramayana.
